Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow

Posted on: October 22, 2011

To my humble opinion, everything in the world is like an opera or a novel. Why? I am a loyal and sincere philosophy believer; so I believe in the development of all things including the living and non-living ones (called in biology). To my eye, all things in the world has life-birth, grow and then death. To an opera and novel, the life is beginning, developing, climax and the end. That is the answer of the above “why”.

Today I would like to take the LED projector as an example to exactly explain its life, that is to say, I will briefly discuss its yesterday, today and tomorrow.

It is known to all that it is until in 2008 that the world saw the appearance of LED projector. Exactly speaking, it is should be called LED light source projector. LED, abbreviation of Light Emitting Diodes is a solid semiconductor device which can transform the electrical energy into visible light. That is to say, it can convert the electricity to light directly.

Before 2008, the projector’s light depends on traditional UHE and UHP bulb. Both of them generate tons of heat when working and they need complex optical structure. And the life is limited. Different from them, LED does not give out much thermal and can enjoy longer life-over 10,000 hours. Apart from what I mentioned above, its brightness and resolution has been close the needs of common commercial and home use. When the first LED projector showed up on the InfoComm exhibition in America, it attracted people’s attention especially those in the same business circle due to its ultra long life span.

In 2009, we all witness the rapid and great development of LED projector. Put aside the weight, its brightness has grown from 10 lumen to 800 lumen, and the resolution from the former 640*480 to the present 1080p-the superb level. So, full high definition image seems a piece of cake to the new LED projector.

With the LED projector drawing more and more attention, there comes out different style of LED projectors. New ones have been integrated into MP4, mobile phone and even the digital camera. Multifunction is the guide. Playing audio, video, supporting SD card, watching TV, recording video… LED projector seems to be a tour de force worshipped by lots of people.

At present, LED is mainly developing for the embedded and entertainment market and accepting appreciation and admiration in most related business. However, it seems difficult to take over more market volume than the traditional projector.

We can bet that there is still a long way to go for it to beat the modern commercial and educational projector. Also, people’s need of higher brightness has become a block for it to break into the commercial market. Though we all witness the breakthrough in brightness, it cannot meet the higher needs of commercial use (2500 lumen) not to mention the 3000 lumen for education as well as more than 5000 lumen for engineering marketing.

Of course, the price is also a factor to impede LED projector for home use. To those who get used to TV and computer entertainment, it is not easy to accept a LED projector which can only be used at night without any decorating effect.

What is more, the new rival or counterworker-laser source has come. It features stronger color gamut and higher brightness. The future of LED projector seems in suspense. For the near future, it is believed that LED projector will play the most important role of entertainment market, traditional light source still takes over the business and education market and the new laser source projector will surely control the engineering field. However, who will integrate the whole projector market?

New things replacing the old cannot be stopped by anyone. Of course, time is the best witness.
